Tea and Cream. A DIY

Hello again!!
It's no surprise to those of you who actually read my blog that I yet again fell off the blogosphere for an extended period of time. But I'm here now so let's move past that shall we? K cool.
I'm here writing today because I am in need of a cream lace dress. A close friend of mine is getting married in less than two months and I was asked to be a bridesmaid *pause for imaginary applause*. I couldn't be more excited for her!! I'm honored to be by her side on her big day.
One problem.
I'm on a tight budget because I'm doing my own saving and every penny counts. So, I did some internet digging and some closet digging to come up with a solution. Which brings us to the topic of this post. I already owned a white lace dress that I'd only worn a couple times and decided to find out if i could somehow get it to be a little less white. Bridesmaids in white is a no.
So I discovered that I could use black tea to dye my dress, super cheap and easy.
Here's how I did it:

First off I'll give you a list of the things i used
-earl grey Lipton black tea (four bags)
-tea infuser (optional)
-water
-salad tongs
-rag
-large pot (bigger is better)
-sink ready with cold water
-bleach small container and gloves
-blow dryer (optional)
-stove top and kitchen sink
-white clothing item (preferably cotton for better dyeing result)

So, to start off, I HIGHLY reccomend that if you're going to replicate this you wash your garment thoroughly, whether it's new and you've still got the tags on or you've worn it and sweat in it a couple times, you need to make sure you get rid of any chemicals that are currently on the fabric, they WILL change the way the dye takes.

Fill up a pot of water as high as you can without worrying about it overflowing (about an inch below the lip) and submerge your garment in the water to it's completely submerged and wet, this will ensure that the dye takes as evenly as possible.
Play with it for a bit making sure the water soaks everything and then wring it out and set it aside.

Put your tea bags into the infuser (if you have access to one big enough). This is to make sure none of the tea leaves escape the bag, although I'm sure they're designed not to I wanted to be extra cautious. Place the infuser in the pot and bring it to a boil. Watch and make sure it doesn't boil over, lower the heat if you have to.

Once the pot of tea is steeped enough - how steeped it needs to be depends on your preference, darker tea means a darker dye, more tea bags mean a darker tea - this should only take about 5-10 minutes, bring the heat down to medium and take the tea bags and infuser out of the pot, then put the garment back in with your tongs.

Continue to agitate the tea and move the garment around to make sure it dyes evenly. You may need to wipe up some stray tea with your rag, but no worries it won't stain your stove or counter if you clean it up as you go

After you feel you've reached a little darker than the color you want (it will fade a little bit with rinsing) I ended up having to wait 10-20 minutes, turn the heat off and wait another 10-15 minutes for the tea to cool a little bit

Take your pot of water over to the sink and carefully dump it out, don't burn yourself it will still be pretty hot. Keep one of the tea bags aside for later.Fill the sink with cold water and put your garment in to rinse off the tea. The cold water should help seal in the dye a little bit.

At this point you should check for uneven dye marks, and here's where the washing comes in. I didn't wash my dress before dyeing it and that's where these lovely stains came in. There was sweat that I couldn't see in the armpits and the tea took to that area like crazy, creating these nasty brown pit stains. Yum.

Thank goodness for bleach. But this won't make it perfect, just less noticeable, it turned out to be more of a yellow than the cream that the rest of the dress ended out, but the yellow won't be nearly as noticeable as the gross brown.

I didn't get many pictures from here on out because my phone died but I'll do my best to explain.
I took a small container and my rag, put on some gloves and got dabbing. As i dabbed I dipped the dress back into the water each time i was satisfied with the color to dilute the bleach and stop the process from turning the dress too white. Once I was done I gave the pits one final rinse.

The bleach still ended up whitening  some of the parts that weren't extra stained so at this point i took that tea bag i had set aside and dabbed it on the parts that needed to get darker. I'm not sure if it will stay but I didnt rinse it off after this step

I then plugged in my hair dryer and got to heat drying the dress outside of the dryer to avoid shrinkage and to help with yet again setting the dye.

All in all I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out!! The stains under the arms aren't so bad once it's on and you cant even really see them in the pictures I took of it so I'm no devastated.

Here's a before and after against some white printer paper:

The lace shell was 80% cotton 20% nylon and the lining was 80% polyester 20% cotton so they dyed differently, but it's fine in this case.

Hoorah for DIY and saving a pretty penny! I couldn't find a single dress that was cream enough, long enough, and cheap enough to be what I needed, so four bucks to buy some tea and get a craft in to occupy myself was the perfect solution for me.

Till next time folks!

excuse me????

so today when i woke up thinking today would be a day like any other. sleep, get up, get ready, do makeup (because its sunday) and get on with it. but unfortunately things took a slight turn. my routine went normally through the getting dressed and doing my hair, but then half way through doing my makeup something odd happened....
i started to sneeze uncontrollably. dangit.. (and just by coincidence only seconds before my first sneeze someone randomly rang our doorbell but looked out the window nobody was there) so anyways this sneezing goes on for several minutes. and im about to scream at my left nostril for getting so disgustingly runny. (GROSS) And then i realize, i have just developed allergies.... crap... i have never had allergy season hit me. like ever. yea maybe i sneeze a little but that happens year long. no i have developed allergies to something down in southern ontario, and i gotta say i am not pleased. as i write my head is beginning to pound and i didnt eve3n realize that was a symptom. crap man. this blows. (Hah i made a funny)
but yea. i have allergies. greeeat. reactine anyone? yes please....

in other news i have decided i am going to try hair chalking. it has been a fad for quite some time now and i was planning on going on a spree at Michaels anyways due to my severe withdrawal from the making of all things crafty... mmmmmm yep. i need to craft
recently i have been obsessed with that layered bracelet look. so these are the ones i am going to attempt once i get my hands on some supplies :)
simple braid with seed beads and a button clasp

woven wrap bracelets with the same type of clasp :)

a little more chunky, but still a seed bead braid. this one is more for a fancy look

and THESE!! i have to find some gold nicnaks to do this with!!!!

and i kinda miss my momma's sewing machine :( or else i would attempt this.
but oh well!!! hah happy crafting to me anyways :)
later everybody

Do It Yourself

Hey everybody. back on the netbook :) so, Christmas is over, and everyone is getting ready to go back to school... well everyone except MEEE!!!! hahahaha. so i didn't get very good marks. ok i got bad marks this last semester, but its in the past and i cant change it. i tried while i was there, i really did, i just have gotten so distracte3d by the future and going to Ajax to be with my sister that school has kind of faded into the backdrop, and all i want to do is enjoy my life. so that's what I'm going to do.
ok yea school is important, but i mean if you're not having fun, and getting awful marks (and you were a near 4.0 student in high school) its time for a change! and nobody can change your life except you. i realized as i was stressing over exams, that in the end, whether i get an a in English or not, I'm going to be fine, and I'm going to have fun doing it!!! so that was my epiphany, and it has changed my life.
along with that, a while back my more than wise friend in the states told me that it doesn't matter how you're feeling, you should always show the facebook world that you are doing just awesome. and not only the facebook world, but the people around you in general. lets face it, nobody wants to be friends with a crabby pants. and let me tell you it shows in his life. I'm across the border from him, and his life through the pictures and status updates seems nothing short of fantastic. he makes his little baby girl seem as if she could lift weights with her pinky, just because she's that cool, but shes just a normal little lump of joy :)
so, i guess that's my little tidbit of information for the day. if you want something done, do it yourself. live a happier life, because you choose to. go get an education, because you choose to. dye your hair lime green for all i care!!! if you want to do it, the only thing getting in your way, is you.

aaaannnd while were at the do it yourself thing, i finished a gift for a friend of a friend down at weber :) here it is :)

i hope you all had a fantastic Christmas!!! later days :)

You cant pick your friend's nose.

hola fellow friends and others visitors!! how was your Halloween??? mine was great!! i was a cat! did my makeup and everything. sorta based it on a tutorial on YouTube... but decided to make it a little more simple, cuz I'm not a professional makeup artist by any means and haven't the amount of makeup this guy does. but anyways, the final result was this....

I was sorta impressed i must say
then...
i did this for fun!!!! :)

but anyways!!! back to the meaning and inspiration behind this post!!! so coming up in a little over two weeks is preference. also known as Sadie Hawkins. so anyways, if you followed the link, you'd have figured out the twist. i picked out my date and got cracking on brainstorming ideas... with myself.... and i got somewhere, but then my good friend Katie gave me the idea of doing something with paper mache, so basically i sat there for a little longer and came up with an idea!!!!

k, before you start to judge let me explain here. with more PICTURES!!! :)

Subject A)^

Subject B)^

Subject C)^

k so now some words of wisdom. As you can see i made a paper mache nose and finger. the final product A) had a string attached from the finger to a cardboard circle inside a tube on the inside of one of the nostrils. Inside the tube was a note B) along with a whole bunch of brown green and yellow confetti (boogers...). when he pulled on the finger, out popped the booger confetti and the note that read C). clever huh!!!! i was super happy about it... i got his room mate to hang it up on his wall. this all happened friday of last week, so the fourth. He texted me on the following monday saying "100 points for creativity." SCORE!!!! hah it worked!! and very well might i add. as of yet he has not replied. but that's totally fine, cuz i like to believe that he is thinking of an even cooler way to answer! and the fact that he has waited this long to answer means he is probably not going to say no... and if he does it will suck.. but either way i will blog about it!!!

SOOOOO now that that is over and done with, i have to head off to study for my last chemistry midterm.... poop. oh well, such is life, and the ball keeps on rollin! toodles!!! <3

Get Smart

HI GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
school is back aaaaaaaaand i kinda have mixed feelings about the whole endeavour. (if that's even how you spell it..) i sorta feel great cuz its my second year and i feel sorta higher on the food chain, but at the same time, i kinda slacked off and am sorta at the same spot as a lot of the first year keeners... hahah soooooooo.....
in other news. my life has pretty much been boring and walmart infested all summer!!! i did keep myself occupied from time to time with events but mostly just boring stuff (i know i should have been blogging guys.. my bad) but now that the school year has started, i can get right back into the old blogging routine :) I'm excited now!!!!!
so yesterday i  made some wicked cute earrings with some leftover lace and stuff i had from another project that i have yet to finish... ( dumb staple gun is busted)
here ill show ya!!!
so this is what i started with. a couple of old bracelets, a cup to trace the circle onto the lace, lace, needle and thread (and embroidery thread for easier finishing touches) a fabric pencil to trace the circle, scissors to cut it out, and a couple earring hooks and jump rings..... AND!!!!!

.......VOILA!!!! yeah it was time consuming... all the wrapping in and out.. but id have to say it was a more than successful project!! yes? i love them. I'm wearing them right now!!!! if you want more details on how i did it and not just a list of materials, feel free to comment, and hopefully we can work something out ;)

in other news, my sister came up to Alberta with her daughters for a week in august this summer.. i miss them already!!!! we went to feed the horses across the way from our house... hahaha Megan was scared :) but we made her do it!! wanna snap shot??? :)
aren't they adorable!!!!! little Nolan is so precious!! he has the cutest eyes ever.....
SEE!! heart breaker right there.... :) i love them....
well anyways, i have an email i have to send to my prof, and this post is pretty decent i think.

c ya later errrbodaay :)

The little things

so today i am being extremely appreciative of the little things in life

'Things turn out best for the people who make the best out of the way things turn out'

Quote of the day today. so im pretty much the happiest girl ever. and its all my choice. yeah some things get me down, but im here in this life once and only once. im planning to make the most of it. do things right the first time, so i dont waste time.

I am at a point in my life where i am almost 100 percent satisfied with the way things are going. of course, every girl has her doubts about certain things, but its hard because its not supposed to be easy. its hard because its worth it. when you have to put your whole heart into something in order to finish it, its that much more satisfying once its done.

So recently ive become obsessed with DIY and recycling old things. like this bag for example
coolest thing ive seen, ive wanted to make a tie bag for a longtime, but this one is the coolest ive seen so far, i might just try it out :) my creativity and my mother's ginome dewing machine.. the possibilities are almost endless :)

so going back to the little things, im so looking forward to continuing on my quest of noticing the smaller things, and appreciating more the life ive been given. :)
